The verbs are divided into two big groups A (ending on a soft ω, by far the bigger group) and B (stressed or strong -ώ, -αώ). Additionally there are irregular verbs which you simply need to learn. The medusa of irregular verbs is τρώω - έφαγα (eat - ate).

To form the tense you need the verbs stem for past tense (it may and will vary from the one in present) and the appropriate suffix. There are more options for the consonant in the suffixes than shown in the table below, to avoid the mess I only show the most common ones. 

The past tense from moves the stress of the verb a syllable back. If the verb doesn't have enough syllables (two or less) like γραφω, a ε is added at the beginning to provide a vowel for the stress. Where the suffix itself provides the needed count (1st and 2nd plural, we and you) this additional vowel is not needed. The verb ζω is one only syllable so it lives in its own world.
