Present participle is used for a secondary action which is happening simultaneously with the main action. It also can work as a verbal adjective describing the main action.

He went home walking. - Πήγε σπίτι περπατώντας

He goes home walking. - Πηγαίνει σπίτι περπατώντας.

Notice that no matter the tense of the main verb the participle remains in present as long as the two actions are simultaneous and the  participle clarifies the main verb. The test you could do in your mind is with the question How?

How did he go home? By walking.

Very often you can't translate this well into English but more often than not it covers the function of the gerund.
